Best rest is more and more common for pregnant women, especially during the final weeks of pregnancy. From the stress of everyday life to health concerns, there are a myriad of reasons as to why you could be placed on bed rest while pregnant.

For soon-to-be moms who struggle with having too much time on their hands or have other children who need to be cared for, surviving the doctor’s orders to remain in bed can be difficult. However, for the health and safety of both you and your baby, it is important to follow the doctor’s orders as much as possible.

If you have been put on bed rest, here are a few survival tips:

Types of Bed Rest

When it comes to bed rest, there are a few things it could mean. While some pregnancies have more difficult complications that require women to stay on bed rest in the hospital, in order to be near for close monitoring, others may be told to schedule resting throughout the day, reduce how long they are on their feet, or take time off of work, as it is putting undue stress on the baby.

Before being concerned over hearing the words “bed rest,” know that it could simply mean taking more time to relax and prepare your body for delivery.


Regardless of whether or not your bed rest is in the hospital or at home, resting and being off of your feet can lead to boredom, especially for women who enjoy keeping busy. Because you will be busy once the baby is born, take this time beforehand to enjoy relaxing.

Watch HBO live, start a new TV series, or start reading through all of those books you purchased but never cracked open.

For many, it can be difficult to enjoy relaxation, as they feel as if they are being lazy or not as productive as they could be; however, as a mother, your first is to care for your baby. Being told to spend more time relaxing is caring for your baby, as your body needs this to fully come to term, thus enjoy this downtime.

Stay Connected

Bed rest can be difficult, as you can feel isolated from the rest of the world. Pregnancy already can disrupt certain hormones, and when feeling sick or away from the rest of the world, it can be a devastating experience. The best way to stay sane is to stay connected. While staying in touch with friends and family is always helpful, consider joining a support group. Women who are in a similar situation understand more fully what you are going through, and their support and encouragement can help you stay strong throughout this difficult point in your pregnancy.

Accept Help

It can be difficult to accept help from family and friends, as you might feel as if you are burdening them with your problems. However, friends and family usually want to help out as much as they can, so when they offer, accept it. If possible, ask friends and family to watch your kids while you are resting, or have someone pick them up from school each day. The less you have to worry about, the better you will feel.


When it comes to meals, consider a meal subscription service. Nowadays, having meals and groceries delivered to your door is extremely common, giving you the chance to have a nutritious meal without having to spend hours on your feet preparing the meal. Because some of those services can be expensive, consider breaking out your crockpot and using that more often, as it does all of the work for you.

Work From Home

If your doctor approves, consider working temporarily from home. With modern technology, many employers are able to allow employees to work from home, as they can communicate via email, through skype, or over the phone. Or, consider taking on a temporary position, such as doing online freelance work.


As long as it has been approved by your doctor, have a masseuse come to your home. Getting a prenatal massage can help improve any soreness you have in your back and feet muscles, as well as help you to feel better about yourself.

Though bed rest can be challenging, doing the best for your body and your baby will help you to have the best chance of having a smooth delivery and healthy baby.
