Avoiding High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is an increasingly common condition, and it can cause a huge variety of health problems if left untreated. For many people, it’s caught too late, and it’s only when heart problems or strokes occur that the high blood pressure is picked up on. Know the warning signs and keep your health in check to avoid hypertension and your body will thank you for it.

 

What are the symptoms?

For many people with hypertension, symptoms don’t occur until their blood pressure is already dangerously high. For this reason, its best to get your blood pressure checked regularly and keep your doctors appointments so that you always know where you stand. Some symptoms that can crop up include: bad headaches, fatigue, vision problems, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeats, chest pain, blood in the urine or a pounding sensation in the chest, neck and ears. If you have any of these symptoms make sure you seek treatment immediately before things get out of hand.

 

What are the risk factors?

You may be at increased risk for developing hypertension if you have a history of high blood pressure in your family. You also are at risk if you’re: overweight, smoke, consume high levels of salt, drink too much alcohol, are often highly stressed or come from particular ethnic backgrounds. If you fit into any of these categories then it’s especially important to keep an eye on your blood pressure.

 

Change your lifestyle

If you’ve already developed high blood pressure or are at risk of doing so, there are certain lifestyle changes you can make to help bring it down. Sticking to a healthy, balanced diet and keeping your weight within healthy limits is a great way to start, as is regular exercise and maintaining your fitness. If you’re a smoker, quitting is of course advised, and finding healthy ways of managing stress in your life can also be helpful.
