Best Expat Cities for Families with Kids

If you’re thinking of taking a job abroad and moving the whole family to another country, there are a number of things that you need to consider.  It’s tough enough to make the decision to move abroad when you’re single, but when you have kids it’s another thing entirely.  You’ll need to think about things such as the safety and crime statistics of the area, education quality, the cost of living and raising kids, any language barriers and how they will socially integrate and the cost and quality of childcare in the country.  With all that in mind, here are some of the best expat cities for families with kids.

Hong Kong

Hong KongIt might not be the first city that springs to mind when you think about where to raise your family, but as a global business hub, Hong Kong is a popular choice.  Listed as one of Asia’s top 5 ‘most-liveable’ cities, it’s also the safest city in the world to raise children, as well as top of the leaderboard for standards of education and quality of childcare.  Perhaps part of the city’s success lies in its local culture, which encourages children to play outdoors, participate in sports and spend more time with family and friends, as opposed to watching TV and playing computer games.

Scotland’s capital city is a fantastic place to raise a family – teenagers will love the thriving arts and culture scene with Edinburgh Fringe Festival running every August and regular film festivals and arts exhibitions taking place in the city.  Whilst the weather in Scotland might not be sunny year round, Edinburgh has plenty of green spaces where families can enjoy a picnic or outdoors activities, such as Princes Street Gardens or The Meadows.  There are also plenty of award-winning restaurants, shops and bars to enjoy, and the crime levels in Edinburgh are at their lowest since 1976.

The centre of London isn’t the ideal place for young children – it’s busy, dirty and noisy, and most people rely on public transport to get around.  The greater London area, however, is another matter – areas such as Dulwich and Bromley are thriving and have all the amenities you could ever need.  Most of these towns have transport links to central London, and you’ll find new build developments springing up where you could find a house for less than you might think!  London is a great place to find a job – investment management and banking roles are plentiful in The City, where London’s financial hub is located.  The city is also a safe place to be in comparison with some other cities across the globe.  You’ll find plenty to entertain kids of all ages in central London, from the Natural History Museum and Madame Tussauds to plenty of cinemas and sports facilities.

These are just a few ideas to consider when it comes to choosing the best city to raise your family – of course, you may have already been offered a job in a specific location, but if you’re just looking for the perfect place to settle down, it’s always good to do your research.
