Family Holidays In South Africa

If you’re after a family holiday that’s a little more adventurous this year, consider venturing outside of Europe and down to the Southern Hemisphere to South Africa. There’s a huge amount to see and do in the Rainbow Nation, and plenty to keep kids entertained, while providing a rich cultural experience far from home.

Visit South Africa’s cities

The 3 major cities of South Africa are Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, and all are worth a visit on any trip to the country. Durban is the best for tropical fun; the warm Indian Ocean water makes for fantastic days at the beach, and there are plenty of amusement parks, water parks and aquariums to thrill the kids.

Johannesburg features a huge array of museums and culture to explore, and Gold Reef City is definitely worth checking out for rides and games. When in the Gauteng Province, make sure you visit Pretoria, South Africa’s political centre, where the famous Pretoria Zoo is based, an unmissable landmark for children.

Cape Town is a city of stunning views, beautiful beaches and fascinating heritage, so leave enough time in your itinerary to get plenty done in the Mother City. If you’re up for a hike and your kids are particularly energetic, consider trekking up Table Mountain, or just grab a cable car if you’d rather have the views without the walk. The V&A Waterfront is a great spot for a ferris wheel ride and an aquarium visit, while the Company Gardens area in the city centre is the place to visit historical museums and soak up the city’s culture.

Rural South Africa

A visit to this beautiful country wouldn’t be complete without a trip to some of the nature reserves, national parks and game parks on offer. Safari holidays are always on offer across the country, with a huge variety of national parks and Big 5 game reserves to choose from. Tswalu in the Northern Cape is a good example of a family friendly game reserve, with many activities for children and lots of wildlife to see. Do your research and some careful planning and you’ll find an endless amount of adventure and fun to be had in South Africa.
