Family Things to do in Devon

Taking a holiday to Devon in South West England next Summer? Devon is perhaps the best county in the UK for staycations, with a wide variety of activities for families, great summer weather, excellent food and beautiful scenery. Devon’s got everything you’d expect from an excellent family holiday in the sun, but without the expense of going abroad. Here’s a few of our ideas for what to do while holidaying in the county.

1. Start with the right accommodation – You might have plans to be on the beach everyday, but you’ll probably still spend most of your time on holiday in the accommodation you book. It’s therefore really important to find somewhere that’s perfect for the whole family. Giving kids a place to play where you’re staying is a great way to ensure they’re happy even when you want to relax for a few extra hours in the morning. Consider Golden Coast which offers some amazing kid-friendly activities such as a surf-simulator and gigantic outdoor pool. It’s also a in a great location to start country walks and offers great affordable family-orientated accommodation.

2. Go for a walk – Devon isn’t just about the coast, it’s also got some amazing countryside and is home to one of the largest National Parks in Britain. Dartmoor offers not just scenic walks around hills and lakes, but also is home to a large range of family friendly sports from horse riding treks to adventure courses such as at the Go Ape facility.

3. Meet the animals – Devon might be best known as a holiday destination, but it’s also one of the major farming centres of the country. Several enterprising souls decided to experiment in combining tourism and farming – with brilliant results. Devon now has some amazing family orientated theme parks such The Big Sheep which features everything from Sheep Racing to kids rides and playgrounds. If your son or daughter is a fan of cute animals, you’ll need to take them to the Miniature Pony Centre which is home to some of the tiniest horses you’ve ever seen. There’s even pony rides available for kids aged three to ten.

4. Go to the beach – No family holiday is complete without enjoying the sun and sand. Devon is blessed with the best beaches in the entire country, but one beach that stands out above all the others is Blackpool Sands. Unlike it’s Lancastrian namesake, Blackpool Sands offers turquoise coloured sea, lusciously green cliffs and a sheltered bay. There’s a cafe for when you need refreshment, as well as wet suits and kayaks for hire if you fancy going on a family adventure.

5. Something for a rainy day – While Devon is one of the sunniest places in the UK, a sad fact of UK weather is that there will almost inevitably be rain on at least one day of your holiday. Devon offers many great indoor attractions, but the National Marine Aquarium stands out above the rest. With everything from clown fish to sharks, this is one of the most complete aquariums anywhere in the UK and is great for keeping the whole family entertained for hours.
