Foot Injuries That Are Preventable

Having any kind of foot pain is no fun at all. You are constantly reminded that your foot hurts as you limp around to get to where you need to go. Many of the foot injuries you could experience are preventable. Here are some of the most common foot injuries and how you can prevent them from happening to you:

Hammer Toe

A curled or bent toe at the middle joint is called a hammer toe. Although mild cases of this injury may just look unflattering in your summer flip flops, it could also be quite painful if your case is more severe.

The most common cause of hammer toe is wearing shoes that fit too tight. Your toes become crowded at the top of your shoes and this causes your toe to bend.

This condition is easily preventable if you get shoes that fit your feet comfortably. Make sure your toes have plenty of room and if needed, get a shoe that is half a size bigger.

Stress Fracture

Basically a broken bone in your foot, a stress fracture can be very painful and will put you off your feet for a while. Besides the pain, you may also have some stiffness or swelling in your foot. Stress fractures come from repeatedly straining or stressing your foot through excessive jumping or running over a long period of time. At first, there may be just a hairline fracture, but eventually the bone can break if left untreated.

To protect your feet against stress fractures, wear shoes that are comfortable and supportive. If you start to feel any pain, see your doctor right away before it becomes a bigger problem.

Ingrown Toenail

Have you ever had your nail actually grow into your toe? This can be painful all the time; not just when you are walking around. If you have thick or curved nails, you may be more prone to having ingrown toenails. It can also be caused by poorly fitting shoes or injury.

There are actually a couple different ways to prevent ingrown toenails. The first is to cut your nails straight across when you are trimming them. If you curve your nail on the sides, it could leave room to grow sideways instead of straight out. Another way to prevent this injury is to wear shoes that have plenty of space for your toes.


If you notice a callus on the side or top of your toe, you may have a corn. Corns are usually caused by repeated pressure or rubbing on your toe and can leave your skin tender and raw.

To avoid corns on your feet, wear shoes that have enough room for your toes and give your feet arch support.

Sprained Ankle

A sprained ankle occurs when the foot is turned inwards, which causes tearing or stretching of the ligaments in the ankle. Many times this injury occurs when running, playing sports, or jumping. It is especially common among athletes.

Although sometimes spraining your ankle may be out of your control, there are precautions you can take to prevent this injury from happening. Make sure you wear good shoes when you play sports or run to support your feet. It is also a good idea to stretch before you do any physical activities.

Many of these foot injuries are preventable if you take the proper precautions. The last thing you want is to suffer from foot pain that you could have prevented.
