Managing Morning Sickness

For many mums-to-be, the excitement of the early months of pregnancy is completely overshadowed by some more unpleasant symptoms. Nausea, or ‘morning sickness’ as its commonly known, despite its tendency to hit at all hours of the day, effects up to 80% of pregnant women at some point, to varying degrees of severity. If you’re one of these unfortunate ladies, learn how to tackle your morning sickness head on to stop it from completely taking over your life.


Try some of these natural cures:

  • Ginger

Try ginger tea or capsules or even sipping ginger ale to ease your nausea, many pregnant women have found this provides some relief.

  • Peppermint

Peppermint teas and aromatherapy oils may also help settle your stomach.

  • Acupressure

Certain points on your wrist can be pressed either with your fingers or with a special wristband to help relieve nausea. This point can be found by measuring three fingers from the crease between the hand and arm, and feeling for a dip where your third finger falls.

  • Regular eating

Although it may feel counter-intuitive, eating regularly can help keep morning sickness at bay. You’ll probably find that you begin to feel sick when your stomach is empty, so eat little and often to keep the nausea away. It may help to have a few crackers by your bed to nibble on as soon as you wake.


What if these don’t work?

If you feel that you’ve tried everything and are still suffering, consider talking to your doctor or midwife, as medications are available that can help as a last resort. If your symptoms are very severe, you may be suffering from a more severe condition called hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes excessive vomiting. Either way, be sure to let your family and friends know that you’re struggling (if you haven’t yet announced that you’re pregnant, you can always say that it’s a stomach virus) so that they can support you and offer some backup help if you need it.

If you’re feeling really frustrated, try and remember that morning sickness does tend to pass by around 14-16 weeks, so you won’t feel like this forever, and it will all be worth it in the end.
