Reduce Your Alzheimer’s Risk

For many of us, the idea of either ourselves or someone close to us being struck by Alzheimer’s disease is terrifying. There is, however, some good news: it’s not all about luck and genetics when it comes to our brain health in old age. There are plenty of lifestyle shifts you can make from an early age to help prevent the onset of Alzheimers and other forms of dementia.

 

A Healthy Diet

Filling your daily diet with nutritious choices such as lean proteins, plenty of fruit and vegetables and healthy fats can go a long way in boosting your brain power. Packing in the omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish like salmon or taking fish oil supplements can be a great start.

 

Keep Your Brain Busy

Maintaining stimulation of your brain and staying mentally alert through memorisation games, crossword puzzles and number games can help protect against dementia, while providing fun new hobbies.

 

Exercise

The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation has reported that regular exercise can bring your risk of developing the disease down by 50%, so start a fitness routine as early as possible to stay healthy. It may be tough to get going if you’ve previously been unfit, but by starting slowly and building up activity, exercise can become a positive and even enjoyable part of your life.

 

A Good Night’s Sleep

Your brain will suffer the consequences if you inflict sleep deprivation upon it, so try and ensure that you’re getting the recommended 8+ hours every night. If insomnia is a problem, try implementing good sleep hygiene by clearing your bedroom of technology, starting a relaxing bedtime routine and cutting out excessive napping in the daytime.

 

Cut Out Unhealthy Habits

As if you needed another reason to cut down on alcohol and quit smoking, it’s now become clear that heavy drinking and smoking are major risk factors for Alzheimer’s. Reduce your odds by quitting and your overall health will be sure to benefit too.
